Question

  1. John Denham MP, Dear Rt Hon John Denham MP ,

I am writing in protest against ELQ.

I live in Bethnal Green in East LondonĀ  and would love to be involved in Community and Youth work in the area. I have lots of enthusiasm, I am dedicated and have some relevant experience. However, I am finding it extremely difficult to progress my career or get a real break without an accredited qualification in community and youth work. Therefore I had decided to do an MA in this area starting this Autumn to give me a better chance.

However, a few years ago I did an MA in Cultural Studies. I had no idea then that my career interests would change as I became an adult. Now I am finding that I am subject to ELQ. This is awful. I am living on a small wage with no savings and will have to work FT or PT to fund my Masters anyway, but this extra cost means I simply can't do it. I am devastated and must now rethink my career path even though I know this is what I want to do.

I do not believe that ELQ is helping to alleviate inequality in education and it is just making things more difficult and expensive for ordinary people who want to change career to do some good in the world and expand their horizons.

Yes I have an MA but I am not rich and I need a qualification to do the job I want. What can I do? I had great plans but now I feel powerless and defeated.

    Yours sincerely,

    Zenobia Talati
